Torry Retrofit Project

How is retrofitting done?

There are several stages, starting with a survey of each home to see what’s needed, then doing the work, and then a final check to make sure it was done right.  This is a very brief overview of the steps involved.

1. The survey

  • This takes 3 to 6 hours depending on the size of the house. Access to every room and access hatch (e.g. loft hatches etc.) is needed to do it properly.

  • It would be done by a team of experienced professionals. It looks at what our house is built of, its condition and how efficient things like your heating systems, appliances and lights are.

  • Measurements are made to understand the current energy performance of your home building and identify where improvements can be made to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs and make your home warmer and drier

2. Recommendations

  • All this is analysed, looking for opportunities for energy efficiency, use and comfort improvements, considering the whole home over its whole lifecycle. Homeowners don’t have to do them all, just the ones that suit them.

3. Proposal and Planning

  • A detailed proposal outlining the recommended retrofitting measures, associated costs, its financing, and anticipated energy savings can then be presented to the homeowner or building owner.

  • A plan is then developed for the implementation of the retrofitting measures, considering factors such as impact on the occupiers, scheduling, resource requirements, and any necessary permits or approvals.

4. Doing the work

  • Once you are happy with the plan and have agreed to it, the work will be carried out and double checked by trusted and certified suppliers/contractors at all stages.

5. Quality Assurance

  • At every stage, accredited/trusted experts will check that everything is being done properly and meets industry standards. There will be inspections at various stages to make sure the work is going to plan and to address any unexpected issues that arise.

6. Evaluation

  • After everything is finished, we will check to see that energy efficiency is better than it was and by how much You should notice that your house is cosier and dryer - and your fuel bills will be much lower

7. Maintenance

  • The work continues to save you money over time with occasional checks to make sure it’s working as well as it possibly can.

All this can reduce energy consumption by as much as 80%, help to lower energy bills, and provide a warm and dry house that’s cheaper to run, more comfortable and healthier to live in.

What’s the catch – how much will this cost?

We aim to do this for every house in Torry through funding from government and other sources with no upfront costs to the households.

If you’d like your house to be considered for an assessment (stages 1 and 2 above) please fill in this application form.
